TMC Library announces two new open access journals

TMC Library announces two new open access journals, which may be found via the Library’s eresources portal eresources portal within our website or directly via the Internet.

The Journal of Librarianship and Scholarly Communication (JLSC)  (2162-3309) is a quarterly, peer-reviewed open-access publication that “provides a focused forum for library practitioners to share ideas, strategies, research and pragmatic explorations of library-led initiatives related to such areas as institutional repository and digital collection management, library publishing/hosting services and authors’ rights advocacy efforts. As technology, scholarly communication, the economics of publishing, and the roles of libraries all continue to evolve, the work shared in JLSC informs practices that strengthen librarianship.” Volume 1, Issue 1, is now available online. JLSC is published by Pacific University Library in Oregon, a private undergraduate liberal arts institution.

TMC Library’s Digital Initiatives Librarian, Kate Krause, is pleased to see the inaugural issue of JLSC:  “Open Access journals like these are the future of scholarly publishing. Traditional publishing methods limit rather than enhance access to academic research. Fewer and fewer libraries are able to pay big publishing companies’ exorbitant subscription rates so researchers are not able to read all the information they need to.  The TMC Library can help you put your research online.  We publish two digital peer-reviewed medical journals in the TMC Digital Commons as well as many dissertations and theses, conference proceedings, and other types of data. The Journal of eScience Librarianship (JESLIB) (2161-3974) “is an open access, peer-reviewed journal that advances the theory and practice of librarianship with a special focus on services related to data-driven research in the physical, biological, and medical sciences. The journal explores the many roles of librarians in supporting eScience and welcomes articles related to education, outreach, collaborations, and current practices, by contributors from all areas of the globe.”  Volume 1, Issue 1 is now available online.  JESLIB is published by the University of Massachusetts Medical School with partial funding from the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services.

Neville Prendergast, Director of the Matas Health Sciences Library at Tulane, lists JESLIB as recommended reading for the librarians in his Data Management Group.  He stresses the importance of this new publication: “Information gathered from the literature, on which research and analysis have been done, serves to help generate new information, ideas and data. These new ideas and data in turn generate new knowledge about eScience ... and the cycle goes on. Data Profiling, Data Management and Data Curation are but a few of the new waves being ridden in an ocean of managing research and new science paradigms. JESLIB is one gateway to learning more on the great strides occurring in eScience and eResearch.  Now is a good time to “get with it” and follow or contribute to JESLIB.”
