The traveling exhibit "Life and Limb: The Toll of the American Civil War" from the National Library of Medicine, focuses on disabled veterans an their role as symbols of the fractured nation. Of the 3 million soldiers who fought in the civil war, more than half a million died, and as many were wounded but survived. Hundreds of thousands were permanently disabled by battlefield injuries or surgery, which saved lives by sacrificing limbs.

Topic:  Come hear the remarkable story of Franklin Thompson, who joined the Union army and served behind enemy lines – all as a WOMAN DISGUISED AS A MAN. Sarah Emma Edmonds Seelye was born in Canada, and after the war, lived in La Porte and is now buried in Washington Cemetery (next to Glenwood) made possible through the efforts of the Grand Army of the Republic. How did this Canadian woman end up in Houston?

Come hear how this Canadian woman fought, nursed, spied, and survived the worst conflict in American history.

Special Lecture and Historical Exhibit

The U.S. National Library of Medicine presents two special traveling exhibits and hosted by MD Anderson.

These exhibits are FREE to the public. the kickoff event, "Benefits of Arts in Medicine" will feature guest speaker Ian Cion, Director, Arts in Medicine, MD Anderson Pediatrics on Tues. April 29th from 12:30 - 1:30 pm in the Mays Clinic, 2nd Floor, near the Tree Sculpture at the Learning Center.

Everyday Miracles: Medical Imagery in Ex-Votos, will exhibit from April 29 - June 7th, M-F, 9-4 pm at the Learning Center. To learn more, call The Learning Center at 713.563.8010.

“And there’s the humor of it” on Display at the TMC Library

“And there’s the humor of it”: Shakespeare and the four humors is a traveling exhibition developed and produced by the Exhibition Program at the National Library of Medicine and the Folger Shakespeare Library. The exhibit is on display at the TMC Library from February 13 - March 23, 2013.

William Shakespeare (1564-1616) created characters that are among the richest and most humanly recognizable in all of literature. Yet Shakespeare understood human personality in the terms available to his age—that of the now-discarded theory of the four bodily humors –blood, bile, melancholy, and phlegm. These four humors were understood to define peoples’ physical and mental health, and determined their personality, as well.

The traveling exhibition consists of 6 panels that examine the intersection of medical theory and literature of the four humors. These four bodily humors—blood, yellow bile, black bile, and phlegm—were understood by Shakespeare, and generations before him, to define people’s physical and mental health, and to determine individual’s personality, as well.
