Join us for a Public Health Information on the Web class on Thursday, August 9 from 8:30 am - 12:30 pm in the library classroom.

The field of public health encompasses a wide array of disciplines including health education, epidemiology and nursing. Digital literacy and the effective utilization of online information are among the core public health informatics competencies for the 21st century. This hands-on class will highlight web resources tailored to the public health workforce.

NN/LM SCR Symposium Award

The NN/LM SCR is pleased to announce that the Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Library, is the recipient of the 2012-2013 Regional Symposium Award.

The symposium Vaccines, Epidemics and Ethics will highlight the latest research on vaccines and their role in the prevention and control of infectious diseases and epidemics. This symposium will include a series of speakers, a physical and digital archival display, a website, a print and web research guide, and an interactive quiz on using NLM databases.

Kate Krause, Digital Projects Librarian at the Texas Medical Center Library, is the principal investigator.

From Beyond Our Borders: Providing Health Information to Refugee Populations

Description: This hands-on in-person class is designed to assist librarians and others who work with refugee populations in locating health information. The resources presented are selected for their emphasis on providing culturally relevant information in the preferred language of the population. Background information on refugees in the U.S. and their unique health issues will be presented. Participants will have the opportunity to become familiar with the features and scope of several Internet resources.

This hands-on introduction to consumer health information will cover the information-seeking behaviors of consumers, the basics of MedlinePlus.gov, DIRLINE, ClinicalTrials.gov and other reliable web pages such as those from professional medical associations and advocacy groups. It will cover sites devoted to pharmaceutical information for consumers, drug-interaction databases and herbal information.

Health Statistics on the Web: It's as Easy as ...1,2,3

This hands-on course focuses on the location, selection, and effective use of statistics relevant to health on the local, state, national, and international levels. The importance and relevance of health statistics in various contexts will be discussed. Participants will have the opportunity to become familiar with the features and scope of several statistics Internet resources through the use of numerous exercises

In this class, participants will learn the best electronic resources to consult as well as ways to improve their print collections. National Library of Medicine Awards Contract to The TMC Library

Eight institutions throughout the country serve as RMLs in their respective regions.

The RML program, originally authorized by Congress in the 1965 Medical Library Assistance Act, is designed to equalize and enhance access to health sciences information throughout the United States. The goals of the 2011-2016 RML contracts are: to develop collaborations among Network members and other organizations to improve access to and sharing of biomedical information resources throughout the nation; to promote awareness of, access to, and use of biomedical information resources for health professionals and the public, with a particular emphasis on contributing to Healthy People 2020; and to develop, promote, and improve electronic access to health information by Network members, health professionals, and organizations providing health information to the public.

We are thrilled to have the opportunity to continue our work, in collaboration with our Network members, to provide health professionals and consumers in the Region with access to quality health information.   In the months ahead, we will be rolling out exciting new classes and funding opportunities.  Stay tuned to our website (http://nnlm.gov/scr/), our Twitter feed, Facebook page and Blogadillo as we announce new programs.
