JoVE- a new medical research tool, captured in real time

Be sure to check out the Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE), a PubMed indexed journal devoted to the publication of biological, medical, chemical and physical research in a video format. JoVE takes advantage of video technology to capture and transmit the multiple facets and intricacies of life science research.
The Texas Medical Center Library subscribes to four of the seven JoVE research sections:  JoVE General, JoVE Clinical and Translational Medicine, JoVE Neuroscience and JoVE Immunology and Infection.
Click here for a detailed preview of JoVE's unique content.
Educational users have remote full text access to all JoVE sections, which can be linked to directly from within PubMed.   Other Library users may access to all JoVE sections while in the physical library.   If you have any questions, please contact us at eresources@exch.library.tmc.edu.

Even Harvard says it can't afford journal publishers' prices

Many libraries, including The Texas Medical Center Library, struggle to afford publisher price increases for journal subscriptions year after year.   With journal prices rising anywhere between 5% and 50% annually (some greater than 50%), the paid subscription model is becoming increasingly difficult to sustain.   The following story, from a April 2012 issue of The Guardian, describes Harvard University's response to this on-going challenge:

Harvard University says it can't afford journal publishers' prices.

University wants scientists to make their research open access and resign from publications that keep articles behind paywalls.

"Exasperated by rising subscription costs charged by academic publishers, Harvard University has encouraged its faculty members to make their research freely available through open access journals and to resign from publications that keep articles behind paywalls."

Title Changes from the American Medical Association

The American Medical Association has announced new titles for all of their Archives journals, beginning January 1st of this year:

“The nine specialty Archives Journals in the JAMA Network changed their names effective Jan. 1, 2013, as part of the ongoing evolution to more closely interconnect the scientific journals published by the American Medical Association.

The journals are renamed JAMA Dermatology, JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery, JAMA Internal Medicine, JAMA Neurology, JAMA Ophthalmology, JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, JAMA Pediatrics, JAMA Psychiatry and JAMA Surgery.

The covers of the renamed journals will continue to reference their former Archives titles for several months following the January change.

Two of the specialty journals will see their new names shortened: the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine will become JAMA Pediatrics and the Archives of General Psychiatry will be known as JAMA Psychiatry.

The JAMA Network also has recently unveiled a new website and a smartphone/tablet app will be available soon.”

You can find links to the A.M.A.'s new Archives titles on the Library's eresources portal.  Full text is available upon logging into our proxy with your username and password.

If you have any questions about these title changes, please feel free to contact us at eresources@exch.library.tmc.edu.

SpringerLink migration to new platform

SpringerLink has moved to a new and improved platform that is optimized for most mobile devices.

Springer will redirect all users to the new SpringerLink platform at link.springer.com, regardless of where you access from, or whether you use an old Springer url.  Individual accounts, however, will not be migrated.  Individual users will need to go to link.springer.com and set up a new profile/account.

Full text for all of The TMC Library's subscribed Springer content should now be accessible on the new platform.  If you experience any technical difficulties, or have any questions, please contact Joanne Romano, Licensing and Serials Librarian, at joanne.romano@exch.library.tmc.edu.
